4 ways to avoid unwanted roofing damage

Taking care of your roof is a factor of home maintenance which should remain imperative to protect the condition of your property as well as the health of your family. It goes without saying that irregular roofing checks and natural weathering combined could result in an unknown and unwanted problem occurring over your property, but many homeowners remain unaware that there are three simple but very effective steps that can be carried out to prevent this. Allow us to introduce you to them.

1. Clear or trim overhanging trees

One of the main causes of roof damage is natural weathering and the elements that come along with that. By this, we mean the debris that gets blown across roofing tiles or dropped and left, whether that be on the roof itself or within the guttering. Over time, these can attract mould growth or cause damage to the tiles themselves, resulting in them cracking or lifting. By trimming back or entirely removing surrounding and overhanging trees, you can limit the amount of shrubbery or debris that could find itself on top of your home after the next bout of wind, reducing the risk of unwanted damage.

2. Work out the age of your roof

Roofs have a lifespan of around 20-30 years. As with most things, with old age comes problems and so the older your roofing is, the more likely it may be that you come across unwanted damage. Inform yourself of the current age of your roof as this can allow you to remain a step ahead of any problems which may begin to occur as time ticks by. If you are unaware of the age of your property’s roofing, there are a few steps you can take, such as asking the previous owners if they either had it replaced or know of the date, locating the building permit or calling for a professional assessment.

3. Arrange for regular professional assessments

Unless you are trained and qualified, you should never carry out thorough roofing checks by yourself. Professionals have the knowledge in both roofing and health and safety, as well as the necessary tools to complete assessment and repair jobs efficiently without causing risk of harm to you, your property or themselves. A regular assessment will ensure that any arising problems are repaired before they develop into a form of damage that requires a full replacement.
